Don’t miss the “sector in focus” section on plastic waste. The huge amount of plastic waste, 250 million tonnes, that we produce every year is one of the world’s most pressing concerns. As it stands, just 16% of plastic is recycled or reused and its production is currently responsible for around 2% of the world’s carbon emissions. Plastics have important end uses from an environmental perspective. For example, they help keep food fresh, hence reducing food waste, and their light weight can help minimise carbon emissions linked to transport.
